Can You Use Insoles in Barefoot Shoes for Flat Feet?

Yes when the shoe has enough depth and the insole matches qualified guidance and current comfort. Toe room and support do not have to be changed at the same time.

01

Toe room and an insole are compatible goals

Choosing a shoe with a spacious forefoot does not oblige you to abandon an insert that is helping you. Flat-looking arches alone do not explain every foot symptom, so the reason for the insole matters more than whether the shoe’s label appears philosophically compatible.

If an insole was recommended for a specific problem, ask how it should be used in the new footwear. Do not remove or alter it solely to make the shoe more minimal.

02

Check what the insert changes inside

An added insert can reduce vertical space and raise the heel within the upper. Assess toe clearance and heel hold with the actual insert in place, following instructions about whether the original liner should be removed.

A very flexible shoe may not be a suitable base for every device. Bring both to the prescriber or fitter if the combination rocks, folds awkwardly or crowds the foot. The NHS advises reporting significant discomfort from insoles; tolerating new pain is not a useful compatibility test.
