Are Barefoot Shoes Good for Overpronation?

A gait label alone cannot select a shoe. Current symptoms, strength, surface, support needs and professional guidance matter more than a universal barefoot answer.

01

Clarify what the label was based on

Ask whether overpronation was identified during a clinical assessment, a retail fitting or simply from looking at shoe wear. Those observations do not carry the same meaning. A low-looking arch is also not a complete description of movement during running.

The NHS notes that flat feet often cause no problems, but this should not be stretched into a claim that every gait pattern suits minimalist footwear. Symptoms and any existing treatment remain relevant.

02

Retain useful support while asking a narrower question

If your current footwear or prescribed insert works, identify what you want to improve before removing it. More toe room may be the aim; that does not necessarily require eliminating all cushioning or guidance.

Discuss a substantial change with the professional managing a recurring problem. Bring the actual shoes and describe the activities that provoke symptoms. A barefoot product category cannot tell you whether a support feature is unnecessary, and a gait label alone cannot determine which new pair should replace a comfortable existing setup.
