Transition tolerance

When drop, stack or flexibility changes substantially, begin with shorter exposure. Keep a familiar pair available and increase only when the current dose feels ordinary during and after use.

Sort by the ground beneath the trail

Look beyond the general trail label and identify the surfaces encountered most often: packed dirt, loose soil, roots or exposed stone. Compare the outsole description with that mix. Large lugs and an aggressive appearance do not, by themselves, settle how a shoe will behave on wet rock.

Check containment alongside flexibility

A trail runner needs the upper to keep the foot positioned when turning or crossing uneven ground. During a fitting, notice sideways movement as well as heel lift. Also consider the openings around the tongue and collar: ground feel is less useful if debris repeatedly interrupts a run or the fit requires constant adjustment.
