Mud and firm rock ask different questions
Widely spaced lugs can release soft soil more readily than closely packed tread, while flatter contact areas may matter on firm surfaces. The rubber compound and the condition of the rock also affect traction. An aggressive photograph cannot establish grip on wet stone.
Consider the transitions on your route. Deep tread intended for mud may be unnecessary on a mostly paved approach. A mixed-surface compromise should be chosen for the terrain you repeatedly use rather than one hypothetical extreme.
Inspect the edges that actually meet the trail
Look for how the tread is oriented under the heel and forefoot, then compare worn areas on a previous pair. Rounded or clogged lugs can behave differently from the new sole pictured online. Clean and inspect the outsole before assuming a slip proves the whole shoe category unsuitable.
Foot movement inside the upper matters as well: secure contact with the ground is less useful if the foot slides over the platform. No lug pattern makes algae, ice or unstable terrain reliably safe. Slow down or change the route when conditions demand it.
