Can You Switch to Barefoot Shoes All at Once?
A small footwear change may be tolerated quickly, but an abrupt change in drop, cushioning, flexibility and daily exposure can introduce unfamiliar demands. Increase exposure cautiously rather than preserving the old routine automatically.Read the answer, then inspect the current options.

Count the changes hidden inside one purchase
A new pair can alter heel offset, cushioning, flexibility and toe shape at once. Wearing it for the same number of hours as your old shoe may therefore be a substantial change even when your route is unchanged. Treat the purchase as a set of differences rather than one switch labeled barefoot.
The AAOS discussion of minimalist running warns against rapid transitions. It does not provide a schedule that guarantees safe adaptation for every person or activity.
Keep the first exposure easy to reverse
Choose an ordinary situation in which another shoe is available and the outing can end without inconvenience. A full shift, remote hike or travel day removes that flexibility. Success on a short trial is information for the next decision, not permission to multiply the duration immediately.
Record the response later as well as while wearing the shoes. If pain develops, reduce or stop the new exposure instead of treating discomfort as a required phase. You can retain the toe-room advantage you wanted while reconsidering whether the underfoot change was too large.
