PEOPLE ALSO ASK / FIT-FIRST FIELD NOTE

Do Barefoot Shoes Require a Forefoot Strike?

No. Forcing a landing can create new load. Use short easy running, avoid overstriding and seek coaching when technique changes are a goal.

01

A shoe label is not an instruction to run on your toes

Forefoot, midfoot and rearfoot describe initial contact; they do not rank runners from correct to incorrect. Deliberately holding the heel up is not the same as naturally landing farther forward. Avoid using a thin shoe as a reason to force an unfamiliar pattern.

The physician commentary on AAOS OrthoInfo notes that different strike patterns can be associated with different injury patterns and that evidence does not establish barefoot running as universally less injurious. A change in where load is felt is not automatically a reduction in total risk.

02

Separate a footwear trial from a technique project

If you want coaching, make that an explicit goal and provide the coach with your running and injury history. If you only want to try a shoe, avoid also prescribing yourself a dramatic landing change.

Use comfortable, familiar running conditions and stop if symptoms alter your movement. More speed, new hills and an intentional strike change together leave little basis for understanding the result. A successful shoe choice should not depend on maintaining a tense, consciously forced posture through every step.
