Can You Deadlift in Barefoot Shoes?

A flat, firm, secure minimalist shoe can work for many lifters. Heavy or specialized lifting still belongs within the athlete’s coaching, mobility and facility requirements.

01

Look for a platform that stays put

For a deadlift, the relevant questions are whether the sole compresses noticeably, whether it grips the platform and whether the upper keeps the foot contained. A barefoot marketing label answers none of those questions by itself.

Check your stance without a heavy load first. In a wider stance, pay particular attention to sideways movement inside the shoe. A flexible sole does not compensate for an upper that lets the foot shift across its edge.

02

Confirm competition eligibility

Follow the gym’s footwear policy and your coach’s advice for the lift. If you compete, read your federation’s current equipment rules; the IPF specifies permitted footwear categories and construction requirements rather than approving every product sold as barefoot.

03

Keep other lifts separate

Do not assume a shoe suitable for your deadlift is also the best option for your squat or every exercise in the session. Heel geometry and personal technique can lead to different choices. The purpose is predictable contact with the floor, not a promise that reducing sole thickness will automatically raise your total.
