How Can You Tell Barefoot Shoes Are Too Small?
Persistent pressure, restricted toe movement, rubbing or numbness can signal insufficient length, width or depth. Light contact with a soft upper alone does not prove the shoe is too small; assess the location and effect of the contact.Read the answer, then inspect the current options.

Separate shortage of length from shortage of shape
Toes repeatedly pressing into the front suggest a different problem from side pressure around the forefoot. If there is substantial front clearance but the smaller toes are pushed inward, a different toe slope or width may help more than extra length.
Pressure above the toes can instead indicate insufficient depth. Observe where the upper is strained and whether a seam or overlay is responsible. Some visible movement in a soft upper is normal; bulging alone does not provide a diagnosis.
Do not wait for numbness to become familiar
Stop a fitting trial that causes numbness, pain or persistent rubbing. Leather softening and textile stretch should not be relied on to create missing sole width or length. Reassess while the pair can still be exchanged.
Light contact with a soft upper is not automatically a failed fit, and FiveFingers uses its own snug toe-pocket standard. What matters is whether contact restricts the foot or becomes uncomfortable in the intended movement, rather than whether every toe is surrounded by empty space.
